Cooper 35: for those on a budget.

Liz and I met up at Cooper 35 for a late night dinner and cocktails. The East Village spot offers $4 specialty cocktails and cheap eats as low as $2. I started with a Lychee Martini, and Liz some sort of bright blue rum drink with pineapple juice. Both cocktails were delicious and easy down. A little too easy: they were like candy. The 'Blue Hawaiian' cocktail is served with an overtly large straw... which I would align as the equivalent of beer cans having "wide mouth" openings these days.

Our decisions on nibbles were a bit more difficult. There are so many great options: sushi, seared tuna, salads, hummus, Kimchi...

I settled on the Beef Negamaki (as it comes New York magazine recommended). A lovely and hearty dish with fresh scallions and a plate of brown rice ($6). Liz requested the Soba noodles in Soy Broth. A divine experience of a dish: savory broth, firm tofu, egg and veggies for only $3. The bowl is arguably two meals worth of food.

The decor is easy and cheap, the servers a bit pushy (but hey, it's nice to keep those drinks coming, no?) and the crowd rainbow sprinkles. You can't really pigeon hole the type of person that ends up there: passionately canoodling couple, a group of 30 somethings and a handful of bar straglers made up the scene.

I'm looking forward to going again. Liz mentioned the Hummus with Chips and Veggies is more than enough for two. I do have a thing for hummus...
