I've become a bit addicted to facebook mobile uploads. After perusing those captured by friends, I developed a fascination in the impromptu and grainy qualities behind them. Above are a collection of mine taken in the past couple weeks or so.

In consideration of the lovely hazy feel of mobile uploads, I thought I'd offer a series. Perusing the mobile albums of friends online, I can't help but think of sifting through antique photos at Chelsea Flea over the Summer: as the quality (for the lack of a better word) seems to be similar. Humor, art and pride seem to be the main themes within the photos selected.

Something good, something questionable.

Every Cosmo Girl loves a man who smells like fast food, no? Burger King has released a new fragrance for men, "Flame," which aims to capture the essence of "flame-broiled meat."

A creepy new version of Collector's Barbie is available: Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' doll comes packaged while falling victim to bird attack. Designers of the doll wish to warn parents that the toy is rated PG13 and may not be suited for all little girls in New York City.

All signs point to Michael Genitempo

Yesterday was wet, today proved down right miserable. The progressive (although not entirely aggressive) rain stirred up nostalgia of my hometown.

In consideration of the moments, and encounters, I had throughout the afternoon, I feel like the subject of a Matthew Genitempo photo. It really is about the glamour jumping and getting wet.

focus: vogue italia

From Miles Aldrige's photo series for the April 2008 Vogue Italia. The use of yellow wove through the images as a motif alongside domestic gadgets and the perplexed expressions on model Caroline Trentini's face. What's more- her bloomeresqe derriere wear. It's stirs an infant feel.

Mary Kate Olsen photographed for June 2007 Vogue Italia: The textures of this photograph took a hold of me- the soft curves of Olsen's skin, the tasseled hair- in a sharp contrast with the lines and geometric shapes of the building. It's beautifully crafted, no? She also feels on the edge, without a safe guard. It's subtly dangerous.

underground expression

Artist Jeff Whelstone’s photographs offer an illuminated perspective on the culture of underground tagging in Tennessee and Alabama. Whelstone’s subjects are found in various dark caverns and grottoes. To achieve the quality and feeling of his subject, he floods the dark areas with artificial light that he totes in.

buttercup, another in the running.

Cupcakes have become an established focal point of discussion in the office. Often on Fridays, admittedly, pretty frequently on Mondays...Wednesdays...I think you get what I'm throwing down here. The new location of the office has stimulated a search for a new venue: Buttercup Bakery.
---
Although the frosting is not as delightfully buttery and light as Magnolia, it can hold its own. The two products are so different, it almost seems inappropriate to compare them. Buttercup's approach is a heavier butter cream. I'd put Buttercup's quality before Crumbs, but not quite making the Magnolia cut. I lower my head as I admit that the winner for cake quality (in terms of moistness) is still Bay Ridge's Little Cup Cakes Bakery.

Recommended: Red Velvet (hello cream cheese frosting) and anything with Chocolate Frosting....

first issue, playboy

With the October issue of Vanity Fair featuring a detective approach to the final years of Marilyn Monroe, I found myself wiki-ing her.

I hadn't realized that Playboy hadn't begun its print until the fifties, with Monroe as the debut model! When broken down, it only seems appropriate.

One: for the fact that she was established a sex symbol early in her career.

Two: a year before, a model with striking resemblance to Monroe posed for risque photos which instigated a media-hype that Monroe was the subject. Monroe's solution to the debacle was to simply admit that she was in fact the featured model- and that she had done it to pay her rent. She felt that the portrayal of herself as a struggling actress would be to her advantage. It was. Here's a nod to the first issue of men's magazine, Playboy, which features Monroe on the cover.

Monroe had established a sense of acceptance and respect for her role as a sex symbol. Essentially her decisions developed a career around this designed persona. Smart business, no?

Over the years, Playboy has featured short stories by Ian Flemming, Vladmir Nakobov (I just finished Lolita! Am I a failure of a lit major for only now having read it?) and Margaret Atwood.

I'm tempted to gather my thoughts on Lolita- but I'm a bit overwhelmed at this time. As with Death in Venice, I am deep in a jungle of analytical thought that is most likely best left untangled at this time.

pet collector, 42nd St.

I am not particularly certain of what is going on here- nor is anyone else. What is more amazing than the fact that these creatures are seemingly content with their roles- is how the owner navigates them to the corner of 42nd and Avenue of the Americas in Midtown Manhattan. I have a difficult enough pushing myself to and from the trains home.

Role call: Two dogs. Three cats. Two guinea pigs.

Is this a domestic Noah's Ark?

three days of ellen page

The three-day Ellen Page marathon wasn't planned. It just sort of: happened.

At any rate, I found myself considering the deeper contexts of each of these three films; The Tracey Fragments, Smart People & Juno. Page has been dubbed outcast in each role- her youngish face, petite bust (is that being generous?) and sassy voice. The staples are there- but could they be swung in another direction?

I view Page as emerging into the film industry much like a Molly Ringwald of her generation. But in giving her that compliment, she'd have to own up to a new role: popular girl. Think Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club versus her marginalized character in Pretty in Pink.

I'm not discounting Page's talent, but rather disagreeing with her being dubbed as a Holden Caufield, as the director of The Tracey Fragments aimed to have her perceived. Outcast sure, but not of Caufield's caliber. She's not throwing the kids back in the Rye Field, but rather, she is losing them. Or did her brother ever exist in The Tracey Fragments? I'd like to consider Sonny (her kid brother) as a metaphor of her loss of childhood. Shortly after he is "lost" she is nearly raped, then allows a high school crush to take her in his car, then push her into the street when he was finished with her.

The director further mentions in the Special Features of the disk that he thought of her character as strong. I'm going to have to disagree, rather passionately. Page's character methodically allows nearly everyone that she encounters in the film to push her around or take advantage of her. She resists ever so slightly with her parents and a convenient store attendant, but when given even the slightest rebuttal, she succumbs to their commands.

I viewed Page's choice to ride buses as a motif for her lack of strength, decision making and control over her own life. Essentially, she relies on the decision of the driver and the pre-determined route to guide her day, much like those that she encounters or is woven into.

29 August 2008

have a lovely labor day weekend.

Things to consider:
--
--
Take the Metro North to Connecticut (I'm already packed. Bottle of red is corked for the ride).
--
Bloomingdales is having a Clinique promotion, if you're bumming around SoHo.
--
Michael Bennet Gallery (65 Greene St, near Broome St) is showcasing Salvador Dali's rarest works. Among those: Alice in Wonderland, Paradise Lost.
--
Saturday (8/30) Farmer's Market at Grand Army Plaza. (Get there early for the best selection). The peaches, nectarines and heirloom tomatoes are amazing right now.
--
Monday (9/1): Caribbean Parade. Starts at Utica, ends at the Brooklyn Museum. The good word is that the best place to view is from the Museum
