Sunday's in the Slope offer a smaller scale outdoor market (in comparison to the Green Markets at Grand Army Plaza and Union Square). Just a stone's throw from my place, I look forward to walking Pilgrim over to J.J. Byrne Park to get pickles from Dr. Pickle. The gentlemen who run the stand simply love their craft. They take their time with each patron- to sample, share the recipe and speak to history and tradition. A large line forms as the gentlemen select the perfect pickle to what a couple grew up with- or craves for a particular dish. Tubs of pickles range from $5-9 dollars.
After picking out a few goodies at the market, we hopped down to Fourth Avenue to watch the runners in the NYC Marathon (we're at Mile 7). An amazing display of athletes, bell ringing Slopers and kids selling homemade cookies and cupcakes.
Perhaps the most warming aspect of the sidelines was the genuine happiness on the spectator's faces- and the transmission of that into the runners.
